Subject Description

Upon completion students should; be able to apply the theory of machine tool operation as a means of developing understanding of the value of tool science as an aid to improved design; have skill in integrating the machine tool in advanced manufacturing processes.

Topics covered include; advanced aspects of design, specification and manufacturing methods of cutting tools. Cutting tool materials and surface coatings. Chip control, tool performance and machinability data and data banks. Tool selection. Process planning, optimisation strategies and CAD/CAM software.

Assessment

Assignments and project work to a maximum of 10,000 words, or equivalent; a test during the semester
