Subject Description

To give students a basic familiarity with the most common polymer, ceramic and composite materials to complement the knowledge of other materials gained in 421-278 Materials. To develop further an appreciation of the interrelationship between the structure, processing and properties of materials and of key factors in the selection of appropriate materials for specific applications.

Topics covered includes; structure and properties of ceramics and polymers. Rational mechanical design data for polymer and composites. Materials failure analysis. Case studies in materials selection and utilisation which illustrate the interdependence between component function, material properties, manufacturing processes and design.

Assessment

One examination not exceeding three-hours (80%), practical and laboratory reports to a maximum of 30 pages (20%)
