Subject Description | On successful completion the student will be able to calculate forces and moments in machine components, mechanisms and structures under load using the methods of vector algebra, and be skilled in determining the torque and power transmission capacities of a variety of drive trains, solving problems in hydrostatics, calculating the vibration response of simple structures and using computer packages for solving problems in engineering mechanics. Topics covered include; application of vector algebra to engineering systems, forces, moments, couples and resultants. Equilibrium of forces in two and three dimensions. Properties of sections, theorems of Pappus. Analysis of frames and machine components. Friction, wedges, screws, journal and thrust bearings, flexible belts, clutches, gears and couplings, transmission of power. Elementary mechanics of continua, fluids and solids. Dynamics of simple structural systems. Introduction to computational mechanics. |
Assessment | One examination not exceeding three-hours and continuous assessment of computer laboratory work not exceeding 20 pages equivalent |
