Subject Description | On successful completion the student will have acquired a general understanding of materials used in manufacturing and the main activities of relevance to the engineer in manufacturing and management. Students will also acquire problem solving skills and project work experience in selected areas of materials, manufacturing and management studies. Topics will be selected from the following areas: Materials processing as applied to manufacture. 'Hands-on' materials processing of metals, glass, polymers and composites. Structure of manufacturing companies. Production management, quality control and manufacturing processes. Computer controlled machine tools, industrial robots. Computer aided design. Elements of systems and control theory. Design for manufacture, value analysis. Forecasting, stock control and work measurement. Computerised management information systems, finance and human relations. |
Assessment | Written reports not exceeding 20 pages and participation in seminars |
