Subject Description

The objective of this subject is for students: to improve their oral and written communication skills, and in particular be able to write for a varied readership; to be familiar with document processing tools that are commonly used in the discipline; and to be able to use research libraries and other resources efficiently.

Topics covered will include: Technical and scholarly writing: the writing process, receiver/audience issues, graphics; Document preparation and maintenance: various tools; Use of library and Internet resources; Giving a talk: technologies for oral presentation.

Assessment

A written thesis not exceeding 6000 words (85%). Oral presentation of the thesis material not exceeding 30 minutes duration (15%). Participation in group activities including peer review, organisation of web site, and planning of a day of oral presentations
