Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should understand the concepts which underlying modern computer architecture; understand the architecture, operation and issues involved in the; design of multiprocessor computers; understand the operation of co-processors and DSP processors; understand the basics of fault tolerant computing.

The content includes; high speed computer systems: Modern computer architecture (a brief introduction) mainly about RISC processors. Parallel processors, multiprocessor systems, co-processors, DSP processors. Fault tolerant systems: Terminology, Modelling FT systems to determine performance, duplex systems, TMR. Typical systems from the literature, consideration the use of FT in life threatening situations. Case studies: Study the design of a multiprocessor system and a fault tolerant system.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three-hours; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages
