Subject Description | On completion of this subject students should; be able to construct models of electrical power components such as transformers, transmission lines, dc and three-phase ac machines, and advanced ac/dc and dc/dc converters; be able to apply these component models to a wide range of calculations concerning steady-state system and plant performance. The contents includes; (i) Power generation and transmission. Synchronous machine theory and models. Introduction to ac power transmission networks and power system analysis. (ii) Power conversion and utilisation. Three-phase power rectifier circuits, including regeneration and effects of source impedance. Induction machines and their speed control. Advanced dc/dc power converters, including up/down and regenerative circuits. |
Assessment | One written examination not exceeding three-hours; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages |
