Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should; be able to analyse a wide variety of electrical power circuits, including single-phase and balanced three-phase ac, single-phase ac/dc rectifiers, and switched-mode dc/dc converters; be able to analyse dc and ac magnetic circuits and performance of single-phase transformers.

The content includes; Single-phase & balanced three-phase ac power circuits and network analysis. Electricity supply. Single-phase rectifier circuits - half and full wave - and basic switched-mode power converters, all with R, L, C & E loading. Introduction to power electronics. Photovoltaic cells and arrays. Magnetic circuits, with dc and ac excitation. Single-phase transformer circuit models and analysis. The three-phase rotating magnetic field with introduction to induction machines.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three-hours; practice classes, tests, assignments and project reports, not exceeding 20 pages
