Subject Description

The techniques of analysis developed in this unit will be applied in later-year units involved with the design of structural elements.

Topics covered include: Properties of Sections and Unsymmetrical Bending, Composite Beams, Shear Centre, Virtual Work, Flexural Deflections, Reciprocity, Indeterminacy, Plastic Behaviour of Structures, Uniform and Non-uniform Torsion, Lateral torsional buckling of beams, Torsional and local buckling of columns.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three-hours (75%); Practice classes and Laboratory work (25%)
