Subject Description

At the conclusion of this unit, students should be able to analyse for the stress state and determine resulting deformations in simple structural elements produced by a variety of loading conditions.

Topics covered include: Material Behaviour and Definitions, Transformation of Stress and Strain, Basic Properties of Sections, Flexural Behaviour, Deflection analysis, Superposition, Indeterminacy, Shear in beams, Torsion of circular shafts, Short columns, Long columns.

Assessment

One written examination not exceeding three-hours (75%); Practice classes and Laboratory work (25%); Hurdle requirement of a pass in 4 Mastery Learning Topics.

Admission to the examination is conditional upon passing each of four Mastery Learning topics. Students may repeat each topic up to four times to gain a pass
