Subject Description

The objectives of this subject are to introduce the measurements and instrumentation used in a process plant; the different types of flowsheets used to represent process plants and their creation using CHEMCAD or equivalent software; and to provide training in solving ill-defined process problems. This subject will comprise lectures and problem solving classes, covering the following areas. Process control methods, types of measurement and instrumentation used in the chemical process industries. Applications of measurement instruments, functional elements used in the measurement of temperature, pressure, flow and level. Types of flowsheets used to represent chemical process plants and their generation using CHEMCAD or equivalent software. Assignments will involve material drawn from other Chemical Engineering subjects, typically material and energy balance calculations, flowsheet preparation by hand and computer, optimal solution of process equations.

Assessment

Up to 12 written assignments, each being no longer than the equivalent of 5000 words
