Subject Description

This subject develops an understanding of the Australian minerals industry in the Asia-Pacific context together with an appreciation of the factors affecting selection of processing alternatives for the extraction of metals from their ores including environmental and energy constraints. Features of the Australian minerals industry. Historical background to the minerals industry. Geology and mineralogy of common ore types. Mineral dressing. Selection of processing alternatives. Environmental and energy management. Recycling. Production of gold. Manufacture of iron and steel. Production of copper, lead and zinc. Recovery of aluminium from bauxite. Plant visits.

Assessment

One examination not exceeding three-hours at the end of semester one
