Students will be expected to have passed at least one of the following subjects 326-102 Australian Business in the Global Economy or 326-103 The Asian Economies or 316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics or 316-102 Introductory Microeconomics or other approved first year subject for students not in the BCom.

Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

The institutions of business and government that emerged in postwar Japan in the context of economic growth and transformation. Topics include the postwar economic 'miracle' with emphasis on structural change, industrial policy, and the role of technology; the organisation of big business, including keiretsu relationships and the role of the trading houses, and of small business, including subcontracting ties; financial markets and labour markets for both large and small firms; consumer markets; government-business relationships and cultural aspects of the business environment.

Assessment

Tutorial participation and essay and outline totalling no more than 3000 words (50%) and a 2-hour final examination (50%).
