 306-204 Principles of Finance

Note

Principles of Finance is an alternative to 306-203 Business Finance. It is a terminal unit designed for students not wishing to major in Finance (although in exceptional circumstances students with H2A or better grades in 306-204 Principles of Finance may be permitted to enrol in later year finance subjects). Students may not gain credit for both 306-204 Principles of Finance and 306-203 Business Finance.

Completion of first year University study.

Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

The structure of Australian financial markets; characteristics of financial instruments; principles of financial mathematics; rates of return and present value; principles of portfolio choice and the pricing of risky assets; taxation and financial analysis; corporate financial management decisions, including project evaluation, funding and dividend policy.

Assessment

A 3-hour examination (80%) and a mid-semester assessment of not more than 3000 words (20%).
