Subject Description | Basic structural biochemistry: amino acid structure and chemistry; proteins, conformation, structure, analytical protein chemistry, enzymes and their kinetic analysis; nucleic acids and protein synthesis, bacterial genetics and antibiotics. Metabolic chemistry: glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, beta oxidation of lipids, and gluconeogenesis. Advanced topics: molecular biology, molecular genetics of mammalian diseases, lipid soluble vitamins, blood coagulation, the generation of the immune repertoire and the physiological chemistry of the complement system. Principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics:mechanisms of activity for drugs acting at autonomic synapses; autacoids and anti-autacoids; cardiovascular pharmacology; drugs affecting fluid and electrolyte balance; drugs affecting the gastrointestinal tract. |
Assessment | A 3-hour written examination (mid-year) and a 3-hour end-of-year written examination. Practical work is assessed continuously. A data assessment test (2-hour open book examination) will be made at the end of the biochemistry practical course, and a 1-hour assessment will be made at the end of the pharmacology practical course. |
