Subject Description

By the end of the subject the student should: appreciate the principles of diagnosis and design in the development of agroforestry and farm forestry opportunities; appreciate temperate and tropical farming systems and the interest in revegetation as a means of achieving economically, environmentally and socially sustainable farming systems; have an understanding of the role of trees in providing land protection, shelter, fodder, wildlife habitat and other values on farmland; be able to undertake a whole farm planning project and prepare a revegetation plan; be familiar with the opportunities for landowners to produce commercial forest products (timber and minor forest products). The program includes an examination of landowner interest in revegetation; the principles of diagnosis and design and whole farm planning; the role of trees on farms for land protection, conservation, shelter, fire protection and other non-commercial values; wood and non-wood product options from farm trees; silvicultural systems for small scale forestry; factors affecting farm forestry and agroforestry profitability; project evaluation and agroforestry research designs. Field tours and project work provide first hand experience with a wide variety of case studies from across Victoria.
