Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should be able to: understand principles and practice in marketing of wood based products locally and internationally; understand economic principles involved in further processing and value-adding, comprehend information concerning the variability of wood structure and properties; critically review information regarding the genetic, silvicultural and environmental factors influencing tree development and wood properties as related to end use. Subject content includes: forest products marketing; world market trends in forest products; marketing plan development; value-adding and product development; wood quality-tree growth relationships; genetic, silvicultural and environmental factors influencing tree development and wood properties as related to end use.

Assessment

A 3-hour written examination at the end of the subject. Practical tests may be given throughout the semester. Marks may also be given for assignments, seminars, projects and practical work.
