Subject Description | On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the development of trees at the molecular, cellular and physiological levels, and the control of this process by both plant hormones and gene action. The contrasting roles of genetics and the environment are considered, and tree responses to changing growth conditions are used as examples. Students also study modern approaches to manipulating tree properties. The course thus covers transcription, translation and the role of differential gene expression in plant development; the role of plant hormones in cell and organ development; the control of dormancy and flowering in forest trees; cambial physiology and the formation of wood; responses to heat, drought and salt stress; and applications of molecular biology and biotechnology to forestry. The subject will be useful to students intending to take 211-440 Forest Biotechnology and Tree Breeding. |
Assessment | One 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester. Marks are also given for assignments and practical work. |
