24 hours of lectures and 36 hours of practical classes equally divided between Forest Pathology and Forest Entomology

Subject Description

On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of: the biology of forest pathogens and insect pests; the effects of these organisms on production forestry; the extent to which forest management practices can increase or reduce problems; and what measures can be taken to avoid, reduce or overcome damage caused by pests and diseases.

Forest Pathology: the significance of diseases in forestry, the principal groups of pathogens, host-parasite relationships, epidemiology and disease control. Forest Entomology: classification, anatomy, morphology, biology, frequency of distribution, control and importance of insects in forestry.

Assessment

One 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester. Assignments and reports on practical work. A collection of insects may be required.
