Subject Description

This course examines definitions of deviance, and the sociological perspectives which may be used to analyse such behaviour. The study of deviance sheds light both on the society which labels certain behaviours, or people, as deviant as well as a greater understanding of the behaviours themselves. Both these aspects inherent within the study of deviance will be explored. The course illustrates the various theories of deviance and social order with specific examples such as violence, white collar crime, suicide and mental illness.

Assessment

Up to 5000 words of written work. An examination of up to two hours may be substituted for part of the written work.
