175-241/341 Natural Language OR at least one core 2nd/3rd year linguistics subject. Students are encouraged to take 175-215/315 Formal Syntax beforehand or concurrently.

Subject Description

A project-based introduction to techniques and issues in computational linguistics. Students who complete this subject should be able to: demonstrate familiarity with current frameworks for approaching the types of application covered in the subject, and the major historical developments leading up to them; demonstrate an awareness of the specific conceptual and practical issues and difficulties of the types of applications covered in the subject; design simple computer programs to solve the kinds of language processing problems considered in the subject.

Assessment

Assignments, essays and projects, totalling 5000 words.
