Subject Description

This subject will provide an overview of some of the principal issues in first language acquisition, including children's language development (from pre-speech onwards), grammatical, semantic and pragmatic development, and the continued development of language through the school years. The role of variability and individual differences will also be considered in relation to current theoretical models of language acquisition and to cognitive and social development. While the course will focus on the acquisition of English, cross-cultural material will be included for comparison.

Assessment

Essays and assignments totalling not more than 5,000 words.
