Subject Description

This subject examines various contemporary models of social development. It takes as its starting point the recent culturalist turn in contemporary political economy, paying particular attention to those models which maintain the key importance of social capital and cultural robustness for social and economic prosperity. The various models of development will be contextualised and interrogated in two ways. Firstly, we will explore how these models fit into the traditions of political economic thought, especially in relation to the problem of commerce and 'social virtue'. Secondly, we will investigate how they fare in the face of some recent developments in the theory of modernisation.
