Subject Description

This subject examines how medical knowledge, practice and technology, as well as the experiences of health and illness, are socially shaped and organised. The subject examines competing analyses of medical professionalisation as well as sociological analyses of the reorganisation of medical practice, education and research. The subject then considers health and illness in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality and social location, with reference to the experience of AIDS. Competing sociological analyses of medical technology and science are introduced, with particular reference to the development of organ transplants and the globalisation of biotechnologies. Students undertake a field work project based on observation and interviews.
