Subject Description

The subject will focus on three major contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues: Indigenous Research Ethics, Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural Property Rights and Mabo and Native Title. All three areas explore the way in which Indigenous Australians are exerting pressure on the Australian State and its institutions to address the historical imbalance of power that currently exists between Indigenous peoples and the dominant system. The power shift can only occur when the Australian population recognise that Indigenous Australians, as the First Peoples of this country have rights that must be respected. Students who complete this subject will gain some understanding of the major issues that Australia's Indigenous population are negotiating with the Government in regards to Indigenous rights.

Assessment

Written assignments totalling no more than 5,000 words.
