Subject Description

This subject offers a theoretically reflexive approach to Chinese studies. It has a dual object: Firstly, it utilises contemporary social, cultural, postcolonial and political theory to analyse recent changes in society in China; Secondly, it takes these theories 'for a walk', questioning certain contemporary theoretical assumptions by scrutinising them in relation to what is, for them, the unfamiliar. Upon completion of the subject students should be able to construct a broader vision of mainstreaming within Asian area studies by making the empirical domain the object of theoretical enquiry.

Assessment

Essay work and examination totalling 5000 words.

Prescribed Texts
