Subject Description

An introduction to the international politics of the Asia-Pacific region, with particular reference to the role of the major powers (US, China, Japan) and selected contemporary issues. There is some focus on debates about the roles of the three major powers in the region and their relationships with each other (US-Japan, US-China, China-Japan). The issues selected for study can vary from year to year but will normally be selected from: Taiwan, Korea, the South China Sea, Indochina, Indonesia, regionalism (ASEAN, APEC). Students who complete this subject should have: an understanding of the international politics of the Asia-Pacific region; an understanding of the international roles of the US, China and Japan in the Asia-Pacific; have improved their skills of political analysis in relation to these issues.

Assessment

Essay work or equivalent totalling 5000 words.
