Subject Description | Sociologists explore patterns and relationships in the often complex flow of daily events. This requires both theoretical frameworks and research tools in order to produce robust and relevant data and to be able to conceptualise the nature of social structures and social action. This subject introduces ways of linking theoretical frameworks with introductory steps in social research. It is constructed around student research projects which bring together perspectives and research strategies through exploring culture, institutions and biography. The subject introduces strategies of cross-cultural analysis as a way of constructing questions in areas that often may be taken for granted. |
Assessment | A one hour class test; a fieldwork report of 1000 words; and a 2000 word essay. |
Prescribed Texts | A reading pack will be provided.
