Subject Description | An introduction to the major issues confronting Europe today, in the post Cold War, post-Maastricht, post-USSR era. There will be consideration of the problems related to issues of identity and nationalism in general, and as these relate to selected countries of Western Europe, as well as the threat of racism and neofascism. The subject further explores who has power and who abuses it in European countries, with examples of corruption. Students will investigate whether European citizenship is a myth or reality in the context of the European Union. Consideration will also be given to the issue of migration in Europe. Finally, the course reflects upon the place of the study of identity in terms of how Europe is conceptualised, from both within Europe and beyond. |
