Subject Description | Heidegger claims that the question of the meaning of Being has been neglected in metaphysics and that this neglect is due to the nature of metaphysics. In examining what Heidegger means by this, attention will be focused on the subject-object distinction, what is a thing?, representation and truth, and the metaphysical meaning of modern technology. |
Assessment | One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available. |
