Prerequisites

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

In this subject, students will develop an appreciation of the relevance of philosophy to issues of public concern by attention to four significant and controversial areas of debate: (1) sexual morality and public policy; (2) business ethics; (3) the justification of punishment; and (4) the morality of war.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, two essays of 1500 words each, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
