Subject Description

The subject consists of a philosophical exploration of a number of questions arising in connection with music, such as: How should we define or understand music? What is the relationship between music and society? What problems are raised by notions such as creation, performance, and authenticity? What is the ontological status of a piece of music? Where do various theories locate meaning in music? By the end of the subject it is expected students will be able to discern the philosophical implications of questions about the nature and interpretation of music, to understand the cultural shaping of key background concepts, and to grasp and compare various theories of meaning in music.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, an essay of up to 3000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
