Prerequisites

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Subject Description

An exploration of recent feminist thought which highlights the changing relationship between traditional philosophy and feminist theory. The subject charts the development of key concepts such as equality, difference, power, patriarchy, sex and gender. Some recent feminist epistemological and ethical theories are also presented and critically analysed. Students will gain an understanding of the philosophical issues involved in feminist theory as well as be able to apply techniques of philosophical analysis to contemporary feminist issues.

Assessment

One class paper, one 2-hour end-of-semester examination, and one essay of no more than 2,000 words plus regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
