Prerequisites

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Subject Description

This subject studies theories of meaning and interpretation in contemporary European thought providing a general knowledge and understanding of some central themes of this tradition and how they arose. On completion of the subject students should be able to apply methods and theses studied to current issues and problems, and to critically examine philosophical arguments and theses.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, an assignment of no more than 3000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
