Prerequisites

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Subject Description

The metaphysics and epistemology of Locke, Condillac, Diderot and Hume will be studied, with the objective of providing students with a critical appreciation of Empiricism and a good understanding of Enlightenment thought in Britain and France. Students can also expect to learn how to state and work through some important philosophical problems encountered in representative major texts.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, an assignment of no more than 3000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
