Prerequisites | One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department. |

Subject Description | Seminal texts in the rationalist tradition, distinguished by the view that genuine knowledge can be obtained without recourse to the senses. Students will gain a broad understanding of the doctrines of the Continental Rationalism of the 17th Century and of the way in which these doctrines are appraised by contemporary interpreters, and an insight into the place of metaphysics in Philosophy. |
Assessment | One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, an assignment of no more than 3000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials. |
