Prerequisites

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

Discussion of some recent philosophical explorations of the nature and ground of moral thinking. Students should become able to think critically about, and to evaluate, the philosophical cogency of those explorations, and acquire a background for their own further philosophical reflection on the nature and grounds of morality.

Assessment

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination, an assignment of no more than 3000 words, and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
