Subject Description

This subject introduces students of Japanese language to various elements of Japanese popular culture as well as the academic approaches taken when looking at popular culture. The subject is divided into three general sections: 1) a brief history of popular culture in Japan; 2) an examination of the various media of popular culture including popular literature, manga (comics), magazines, newspapers, television and film, and music; 3) understand the relationship between popular cultural phenomena and society in general, including a discussion of popular culture as both a product and a determinant of national and gender identity.

Assessment

Tutorial paper (1,000 words); book report (1,500 words); final essay (2,500 words). Class participation will also be assessed. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70 percent of all classes in order to be eligible to submit the final essay.
