Subject Description

An introductory course which examines aspects of Chinese culture and society useful for language learners and of general interest to undergraduates. Both late traditional and contemporary society will be covered. Topics investigated may include poetry, painting, calligraphy, medicine, performing arts, storytelling, the family, ancestor worship, popular religion, agriculture, commerce, bureaucracy, and crime. Students who complete this subject will gain familiarity with some major themes in Chinese culture, traditional and modern; an understanding of some of the basic dynamics of Chinese society; and insight into some of the cultural values and social structures reflected in the Chinese language.

Assessment

Written work not exceeding 2,000 words; a 2 hour written examination.
