One 2 hour lecture and one 1 hour tutorial per week

Subject Description

Using texts of literature, philosophy, and intellectual history, supplemented by films of both Western and Chinese origin, this subject will examine both how the Chinese are imagined and portrayed by Western cultures, and how the Chinese depict themselves.

Assessment

Class participation; term paper not exceeding 2500 words; homework or in-class work not exceeding 500 words; final examination (one hour).
