Subject Description

This subject will explore the emergence of the global phenomenon of Islamisation as a vibrant force in the 20th century Muslim world counteracting the forces of secularisation and westernisation. It will examine major themes of the Islamisation movement, its assumptions, agendas, methods, key concepts, institutions, as well as the areas it has targeted for reform, such as law, economics, finance, politics, education and knowledge. It will explore the contributions of key thinkers to the debate and examine the relationship between Islamisation and westernisation asking the question why Islamisation took off in some contexts, but was effectively blocked in others. It will also examine the critique of Islamisation by a number of Islamic intellectuals and attempt to evaluate the success of the project in a number of key areas.
