Subject Description

This subject will enable students to understand the dynamic of political Islam in the present Indonesia. The students will study also the history of the Islamic movement during the colonial period and after independence. Islam as a political force has to be understood within the wider context of domestic political and economic development, as well as the increasing role of Islam in the world. As a political force, the changing relations between Islam and the state are important to be analysed. Students will study the changing value orientation of Moslem youth living in the cities, and the dynamic of the "pesantren" (the Islamic education institution) which exists mostly in rural Java.

Assessment

One two-hour written examination (mid-semester) and one essay of no more 4,000 words. (Third-year students may take a written final exam instead).
