Subject Description

This subject is taught in English and it will cover topics such as (a) historical development of Islamic thought in the past 1400 years; (b) the social, political and historical circumstances in which contemporary Islamic thought began to develop in the modern period; (c) main trends of contemporary Islamic thought with particular emphasis on Revivalism, Neo-Revivalism, Modernism and Neo-Modernism, their characteristics and the impact of these trends on Muslim society.

Assessment

1 essay and assignments totalling not more than 6000 words.

A collection of readings is available from the Department at the beginning of the semester.
