Subject Description

The subject traces the development of the literary, educational and social/political dispute between the linguistic purists and the advocates of demotic modern Greek. Particular attention is given to the emergence of the Demoticist movement in the literature and educational reform in the 19th and 20th centuries and to various manifestations of diglossia in contemporary Greece.

Assessment

3000 words of written work (50%) and a 2-hour examination (50%).
