Prerequisites

All applicants will be required to sit for a written test (UTESL/ESL) and an oral selection test to determine their level of language proficiency before they are able to enrol in this subject. Students who are native speakers of English or whose language proficiency is near-native are not eligible to enrol.

Subject Description

The curriculum focuses on conversation-based activities designed to develop participants' oracy for self-expression, practical purposes and communication of knowledge. Participants will be provided with opportunities to speak English with greater confidence, fluency and intelligibility in a range of formal and less formal situations. Their knowledge of the phonological system in English (rhythm and intonation particularly) will be developed in the context of the situations studied. Students who complete the course will be able to recognise verbal and non-verbal features of spoken communication and to understand the role they play in conveying meaning.

Assessment

Continuous assessment in oral and written work; two written transcriptions and oral delivery of these passages; two twenty-five minute oral tests; totalling no more than the equivalent of 4000 words.
