Fourth-year or Postgraduate standing in anthropology, sociology, economics, development, agriculture, forestry, geography, engineering, biology, medicine, education, commerce, or law AND successful completion of 136-278/378 Applied Anthropology or equivalent subject.

Subject Description

Seminar on applying anthropology research, skills, and information to help understand the causes of and seek solutions to practical problems in economic development, native title, and related issues here in Australia and overseas. Content will emphasize the needs, motivations, wider circumstances, and decision-making of the various people and groups involved while focusing on the detailed investigation and discussion of a few cases. Content will also include practical career information and advice. In addition to topics chosen by the subject coordinator, students will select their own problems or cases to investigate, report on in the seminar, and write about in their term essay. Student contact with appropriate people and agencies will be facilitated where possible and appropriate.

Assessment

One 2-hour written test taken in class and worth 40% of the total mark, one oral presentation to the class worth 10%, and one term essay of 4,000 words worth 50% of the total.
