Subject Description

This subject combines the subject-matter, teaching arrangements and assessment requirements of the subject 136-341 Approaches to the History of Science with another 200-level or 300-level history of science subject taken concurrently. As with 136-341, the subject is concerned with the different understandings that have been presented by different historians of science of the historical roots of modern science. By analysing several different approaches that have been adopted to the science of the past, students are expected to develop a critical appreciation of current methodological debates, and then to bring this to bear on the materials being studied in the second component of this subject. The essay required for 136-341 will be on a topic deriving from the second subject being studied concurrently, but will draw on the readings for 136-341 and will thus be expected to display a more advanced level of historical sophistication. This essay will be additional to essays prepared for the subject being studied concurrently.

Assessment

As for 136-341 Approaches to the History of Science, together with that for the other 200-level or 300-level history of science subject taken concurrently.
