Subject Description

This subject will treat recent advances in anthropology, palaeontology, the neurosciences, psychology, and evolutionary biology which are producing new ideas about the origins of and relationships between the human brain, mind, language, behaviour, and culture. Specific topics to be treated will vary somewhat each year, but will include recent studies of the evolution of language, and the relationships between the morphological, mental, and cultural evolution of Homo sapiens with reference to recent advances in the neurobiology of consciousness. The subject is designed to complement Anthropology 136-287/387, Evolutionary Psychology and Cross-Cultural Explanations of Social Behaviour.

Assessment

Six 800-word discussion papers OR one 5000 word essay OR on 2000 word essay and a 3-hour exam.
