Subject Description

Cross-cultural and comparative perspectives on the biological and social constructions of sex and gender, with a focus on ideologies of sexuality, femininity and masculinity; gender-based classification systems; interrelations of gender, sex, power and authority and the anthropology of sexual reproduction. Students who complete this subject should: have an understanding of the construction of gender and sex in a variety of the world's societies; have gained a knowledge of gender-based systems of social classification in non-Western societies; have acquired a knowledge of contemporary critiques of the representation of women's and men's lives in ethnography; and have explored the anthropology of sexual reproduction.

Assessment

Written work or equivalent totalling 5000 words.
