Contact | One two-hour seminar each week. Students should expect to spend up to four hours per week working on materials at Archives during normal opening hours (9-1, 2-5 weekdays) under the supervision of archives staff |
Subject Description | A series of weekly two-hour seminars over one semester, introducing the nature and purpose of archives, and their assessment, categorisation and description for historical research, and offering practice in research and writing from archival sources. The workshop will normally involve group work on a single collection in the University of Melbourne Archives, with visits to related collections in other institutions, excursions to significant sites, and interviews with persons associated with the collections. |
Assessment | Three pieces of written work: one exercise in the descriptive listing of archives; one exercise in the assessment of a collection for historical research; one research essay of 3000 words based upon archival records. These exercises and the essay will relate to archival materials from the one collection, and they may provide opportunities for small group as well as individual work. Total assessment will not exceed 6000 words. |
